Chlorine and Coronavirus

Our pools are the safest place to be. “Chlorine and Bromine that are in pools inactivate the virus” – Dr Ebb Lautenbach – Chief of infectious diseases at the university of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine

Private Pools for Social Distancing

Our private pools are perfect to ensure uniform following of current and future government social distancing guidelines.

Maximum 3 students per class

With just 3 students per class and often just one class in the pool, we can further minimise the risk as contact with those from outside of your household is easier to achieve.

Covid Safety Officer

Each of our pools has a “Covid Safety Officer” to ensure that we closely follow government guidelines of best practices during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In this new world we find ourselves in, many parents are naturally concerned about the idea of starting or returning to swimming lessons. Here at Elite Swimming Academy, we have been working tirelessly to adapt and improve our facilities to ensure that our customers are as safe as possible and that our swimmers can progress as fast as possible.

As a luxury private swim school running from private facilities we have been practicing social distancing for years – way before it became the norm. By swimming with us you can be certain that our safe, hygenic and well maintained pools will be ready to welcome you when you feel ready.

There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g, with chlorine and bromine) of pools should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.

We look after our pool water very well. We test regularly, disinfect surfaces and with such low footfall you can be sure of a much safer environment in comparison with conventional swimming lessons. We have the lowest swimmer to pool ratios around and often just have 3 swimmers in the whole building at any one time greatly lowering the risk.

When you visit our facilities you can expect to see:

  • Additional safety signage and hand sanitiser stations
  • An Increased cleaning regime
  • Online feedback and award systems for swimmers
  • Small changes to entry and exit points where applicable
  • One way systems at busier pools

We encourage (but do not enforce) that all swimmers come “swim ready” ie already in their swimming gear and that they shower at home. This minimises contact with the changing areas.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding our adaptations to Covid then please feel free to call or email us any time. We have put a great deal of effort into making sure we have gone above and beyond with health and safety measures but we are always here for you if you wish to discuss anything in more detail.

We are committed to being available, reactive and attentive to your needs at every stage in order to ensure you & your children’s safety at all times.

Covid FAQ’s for ESA lessons

How are ESA minimising contact at their pools?

Our model for lessons is not changing as we only have 3 swimmers in a class at any one time and in most cases just one or two classes in a pool at any one time. This in itself greatly reduces contact. We do however ask that only one parent from each family comes to view lessons and that siblings only come if absolutely necessary to minimise the amount of people in the building at any one time. We also ask that swimmers shower at home where possible and come beach ready where possible to minimise contact in the changing rooms. More individual measures will be in place at certain pools in accordance with government guidelines.

Should my child shower at the pool or not?

Showering before you swim is a vital contribution to ensuring the free chlorine in the pool water is available for disinfection of SARS-CoV-2 (rather than being used to clean dirt off swimmers). We are also encouraging swimmers to shower at home before arriving at the pool to reduce the time spent in shower/changing areas.

What does “beach style” mean. Do I have to drive my child home in their wet stuff?

What we mean by “beach style turn up and swim” is that, wherever possible, arrive at the pool already wearing your swimming costumes underneath your clothes and having showered at home. We are encouraging swimmers to do this to minimise the time spent in changing areas. Similarly we are encouraging swimmers to shower at home after their swim if possible, again to minimise the time spent in the changing and shower areas after a swim.

However, private changing facilities will still be available for swimmers both pre and post swim.

Should people with health conditions/disabilities return to the pool?

Absolutely, we know that swimming is a fantastic activity for people with a range of health conditions / disabilities. However, those in the high risk and moderate risk groups should consider the latest government advice before returning to the pool.

People categorised as “high risk” or who have concerns may wish to consult with their medical practitioner before returning to the water.

However, private changing facilities will still be available for swimmers both pre and post swim.

Can people who are shielding return to swimming?

People who are shielding should follow the latest government guidance.

Are you sure that cleaning equipment in pool water is sufficient?

Research has been carried out on this subject and The Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group will be publishing the cleaning parameters shortly. When this is published we will update this answer and link to the relevant technical note for ease of reference.

Additionally, in between sessions we are advising that submerging a float into disinfected water will limit the risk of transmission. This will not guarantee any virus if present will be eliminated. We also advocate wherever possible to try not to share equipment to further minimise risk of transmission.
